Murray's Cheese Reopens Grand Central Store With All New Look & More Cheese

NEW YORK, NY – When the doors open at Murray’s in Grand Central Terminal on Tuesday, September 3, there will be a new bloom on the cheese rinds: more good things to eat, more space, and a whole new look and feel. 2013 marks Murray’s 10th year in the Grand Central Market located inside the largest train station in the world, a perfect renewal for this New York institution.

Gone are the excess stainless steel and the railroad-track layout, however appropriate that design might have been for the location. In are warm woods, less clutter, and an expanded selection of goodies—over 100 new items—including many new cheeses, plus artisanally-made prosciutto and salami, and inspired condiments.

And there’s a brand new cheese case. In the past, Murray’s cheesemongers stood on a platform to speak with a customer over the high top of the deli-style cheese case. The new, shorter European style case will make conversation (and sampling) so much more enjoyable.

Visitors can stop in before work for yogurt and granola, wow co-workers at lunch with meats and cheese to build Murray’s sandwiches, or visit before dinner to pick up everything for a cheese and wine pairing. Murray’s in Grand Central has always impressed with the same expansive cheese selection as in their original Greenwich Village shop, but the new Murray’s will be the jewel in the Market.

“Murray's Cheese has been a New York institution since 1940 and we have a duty and a desire to honor our history. But we're constantly looking ahead to the future,” says Murray’s Cheese owner Rob Kaufelt. “Our newly renovated shop in Grand Central will make it easier and more pleasant to share some of the best cheese in the world with everyone who passes through this landmark building.”

While Murray’s Grand Central will unveil its new look on September 3, expect more deliciousness in the coming weeks. From September 17 through November 1, visiting cheese makers will sample their wares on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 3- 7PM, and there will be tastings of Murray’s prepared foods like new editions of Murray’s famous Mac and Cheese, plus inspired bread spreads and fulfilling salads on Tuesdays and Thursdays over lunchtime. The month of October—American Cheese Month—will bring an official Grand Opening Celebration so stay tuned for more tastings, contests and giveaways.

Two ways to get your cheese at the new Murray’s Grand Central:

• Take a number for service from an expert cheesemonger, who will give you all the attention you have time for, plus plenty of tastes.

• Grab and go—sometimes you’re in a rush, so the new Murray’s at Grand Central stocks many of the shop’s best-selling cheeses and cured meats wrapped up and ready to go, as well as an expanded selection of prepared foods for lunch or dinner.

Murray’s is located on the east side of Grand Central Terminal’s Main Concourse on the upper level.
