Ecuador's Shrimp Industry Strikes Out At New US Tariff

QUITO, Ecuador-Ecuador shrimp industry officials say a new 11.68% tariff on sales to the United States will lead to some $60 million in losses.

Industry officials say they could complain to the World Trade Organization about the tariff on shrimp exports to the U.S, Ecuador's largest market.

"It's a major blow to the competitiveness of the product," said the president of the Chamber of Aquaculture, Jose Antonio Camposano, on Wednesday.

The tariff, approved last week by the U.S. Department of Commerce and in effect since Monday, also applies to other nations. The U.S. alleged that the exports from these countries have subsidies affecting the U.S. industry.
