GILROY, Calif., USA – Syngenta Flowers, Inc. is pleased to announce the winners of the 2013 Goldsmith Scholarships. Caitlin Davis was awarded the Goldsmith Seeds Floriculture Business Advancement Scholarship, and Chris D’Angelo won the Glenn Goldsmith Breeding Excellence Scholarship. Both were awarded $7,500 for future educational use.
“Syngenta has chosen two outstanding recipients with promising futures in horticulture,” says Scott Valentine, president of Syngenta Flowers, Inc. “The industry will need bright, young leaders to be innovative and offer advancements in the field. We hope these scholarships will help Caitlin and Chris develop the skills they need to excel in their ornamental careers.”
Davis is earning a B.S. degree in Horticultural Science from North Carolina State University. Her passion for horticulture, mixed with her international experience and outstanding academic record, made her a model recipient for the scholarship. She has a strong desire to work in the ornamental plant industry after completing her degree and hopes to start her own urban landscape design business focusing on sustainability.
D’Angelo is a recent graduate of Cornell University with a B.S. degree in Plant Science and a concentration in plant breeding and horticulture. This fall, he will be pursuing a Ph.D. in Plant Breeding and Genetics with Horticultural Crops at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. D’Angelo has notable experience in the industry and has showcased his leadership skills through internships and extracurricular activities. After graduation, he would like to secure a position as a commercial plant breeder.
This is the third year Syngenta Flowers, Inc. has awarded the Goldsmith scholarships. The scholarships are given in honor of Glenn Goldsmith, the founder of Goldsmith Seeds, and the contributions he made to the floriculture industry.
