Team BEEF: Fuel For The Finish

As the Ralph Waldo Emerson saying goes, "Life is a journey, not a destination." For many Americans, the journey toward better health and active living is an ongoing struggle. For the 90-plus percent of Americans who love beef, it has always been the role and responsibility of the Beef Checkoff Program to explain how to incorporate beef in a healthful diet and lifestyle. Back in 1985, long before this country was facing an obesity epidemic, the beef industry established a Nutrition Statement of Principles. This nutrition guidepost outlines the beliefs that are central to sound science and the pursuit of educating thought leaders and Americans on the facts about beef nutrition. Time and time again, this Nutrition Statement of Principles has been the bedrock of our research and communications efforts.

While beef offers sizzle, great flavor and ten essential nutrients, for years it has been type-cast as America's poster child for unhealthy living. Just Google the term "fat" and you’ll find images pointing to the burger. However, a movement established several years ago serves as, perhaps, the best testimony of how changes are being made when it comes to healthful living. Across the country, State Beef Councils have been fueling physical activity through Team BEEF.

Research has found that physical activity is more effective when coupled with a protein-rich diet because it helps to maintain muscle mass while losing fat. Just a 3-oz. serving of lean beef, about the size of an iPhone, supplies 25 grams of protein in about 150 calories. Whether you’re just starting to exercise or you're a seasoned athlete, the protein and nine other essential nutrients in beef work together to build muscles and keep your body healthy. Following a healthy diet before, during and after exercise helps maximize performance and recovery.
