Q&A With Vea Kessissoglu Of Kesso Foods

Vea Kessissoglu is the owner of Kesso Foods, a Greek yogurt shop in East Elmhurst. Her parents opened the shop in 1986. Today, Kesso Foods supplies yogurt wholesale to many Manhattan grocery chains and Greek restaurants in Queens, Brooklyn and New Jersey, including Stamatis restaurant in Astoria.

Nicollette Barsamian: So what makes Greek yogurt taste so good?

Vea Kessissoglu: For starters, it is strained and becomes very thick and creamy (because most of the water comes out). And it also has live cultures, which makes it very healthy. When we make our yogurt, we make it the old-fashioned way. We strain it overnight and we have a specific recipe that we have worked on for many years. It’s not too sour and not too sweet. We don’t add any sugar or flavoring. That’s what makes it so good.

NB: Why did your mom open the yogurt shop in 1986?
