Flower Farms In The Last Frontier

MATANUSKA-SUSITNA BOROUGH – After years of groundwork, the EagleSong Peony Farm is now a blooming business.

“It's fun, it's hard, it's sad,” said owner Mike Williams. “Probably the biggest feeling is hope.”

Mike and Paula Williams’ farm is 40 miles from the nearest road.

“I love the challenge of this. We're probably the only farms in the state of Alaska right now that is growing off the road system. We're completely isolated. We have to move our product by plane. I love the challenge and the logistics involved in that and the challenge to myself that I can do it,” said Williams.

Peonies are the perfect flower to grow in Alaska. They need a cold winter to stay dormant and because of the late growing season, they get a late start. That means Alaska is the only place the flowers are available at the end of summer and early fall.
