NEW YORK — Smithfield Foods Inc. said Monday that it has ended its relationship with celebrity chef and restaurateur Paula Deen, following her admission in a recent court deposition that she had used racial epithets in her past.
Deen had been an endorser for Smithfield meats, with her name and face on products including its spiral-sliced ham.
The move by Smithfield follows an announcement by the Food Network on Friday that it wouldn’t be renewing Deen’s contract when it expires at the end of this month. Deen issued a video statement shortly before the Food Network announcement, apologizing to the public.
