Fisheries Minister: Love Our Lobster Campaign Working

A campaign to promote lobster is helping to boost sales and support local fishers, says Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development Minister Ron MacKinley.

“The Love Our Lobster campaign is a great opportunity to support our hard-working fishers, processors, retailers and peddlers,” the Minister said. “The best thing Islanders can do to support the lobster industry is to eat more lobster.”

The department is partnering with Island radio stations Ocean 100 and Hot 105.5 and 21 retailers across the province promoting lobster sales with contests offering prizes of free lobster. Anyone who buys lobster at any of the participating retailers this month has a chance to win 50 pounds of lobster to be served by The Culinary Institute of Canada at a party for 20 people. Various other prize draws will be made.

More than 1,200 fishers are involved in the lobster fishery. Last year, more than 26 million pounds of lobster were landed with an approximate value of $250 million to the Island economy, including spin-offs. The lobster fishery employs about 6,000 people.

“The lobster industry is a significant contributor to the economy of Prince Edward Island,” the Minister said. “We are working very hard to increase demand for lobster and strengthen the industry.”

The Love Our Lobster promotion ends June 27.
