CANBY, Ore. – Terra Nova Nurseries announced today a new collection of sedum varieties, called the Sedum Desert™ series, is now available to garden centers. This new series incorporates three introductions, including Sedum ‘Desert Black’, Sedum ‘Desert Blonde’ and Sedum ‘Desert Red’. As a whole, this collection features exquisite foliage color and habit, beautiful flowers and very showy seed heads.
Sedum ‘Desert Black’ has black leaves, multiple crowns the first year, short stems, and produces rose-pink flowers. Bred for vigorous basal branching and good garden performance, ‘Desert Black’ is perfect for mixed beds, borders and dry gardens. ‘Desert Black’ requires good drainage and full sun exposure for optimal performance. The average size includes 11” Width / 8” Height / 9” Flower Height and it grows well in zones 4 – 10.
Sedum ‘Desert Blonde’ has blue-green leaves, multiple crowns the first year, and very short stems. Its creamy yellow flowers mature to soft red seed heads. In the summer, its leaves take on a purple tint. ‘Desert Blonde’ is great for mixed beds, borders and dry gardens. It requires well-drained, lean soil and full sun exposure. The bloom time for this variety is August and September. ‘Desert Blonde’ grows well in zones 4 – 10 and its average size is 11” wide, 8” high and has a 9” flower height.
Sedum ‘Desert Red’ has a flat spreading habit with small blue-green leaves that darken in high light. This new introduction has a completely different look than the other varieties in the series. In late summer, the deep rose-pink flowers mature to amazing shiny-red seed heads. The red seed heads extend the showy season for months. ‘Desert Red’ grows well in the Deep South and is deer-resistant and drought-tolerant.
Retailers that are looking to add depth, beauty and charm to their garden center displays this spring and summer, can request the Sedum Desert series by name from their local grower. For more information, visit Terra Nova Nurseries’ website at www.terranovanurseries.com.
