Prairie Farms Dairy Wins School Milk Contract Based On Taste

Thirteen school districts have awarded a $969,000 milk contract to an Illinois-based dairy cooperative that wasn't the low bidder but had better-tasting milk.

Prairie Farms Dairy Inc., based in Carlinville, Ill., topped Dean Foods Co. and Kemps LLC for the contract to supply milk next fall to schools in East Troy, Elmbrook, Franklin, Germantown, Greendale, Greenfield, Herman, Kettle Moraine, Lomira, Menomonee Falls, Mukwonago, New Berlin and South Milwaukee.

That's despite the fact that Prairie Farms cast the highest bid of $969,148 for the annual contract, compared with Kemp's bid of $942,387 and Dean's bid of $934,683.

On price alone, Dean's should have won the contract by a margin of nearly $35,000.
