Fishing Quotas Cut For Lake Erie Yellow Perch, Pickerel

Commercial fishermen on Lake Erie have had their quota for this year reduced.

The Lake Erie Committee announced the total allowable catch for 2013 on March 28th.

The allowable catch for yellow perch – the tasty panfish that is a staple of seafood restaurants along Erie’s north shore – has been reduced 10%. Commercial fishermen were allowed to take 13.63 million pounds last year. This has been reduced to 12.23 million pounds.

Quota for the waters off Port Dover and Kent-Essex will not change this year. All of the reduction in Ontario is confined to the productive waters off Port Stanley in Elgin County.
