RAEFORD – House of Raeford announced Thursday it plans to close its turkey slaughtering plant in Hoke County as part of restructuring, putting more than 900 people out of work.
The plant will shut down over the next four to six months after producing holiday-season turkeys, the company said. The move is part of a plan to focus the Rose Hill-based company on chicken production and expansion of fully cooked poultry lines.
The company's Raeford cook plant, about a mile away on U.S. 401 Business, will remain open, spokesman Dave Witter said. The 400 jobs there are secure, he added.
With 950 workers, the House of Raeford slaughtering plant is by far the largest employer in Hoke County.
