Five Star Family Growers, an Auburndale blueberry grower, announced Thursday it has begun construction of a packinghouse and cold storage facility that will process more than 1 million pounds of fresh blueberries beginning this spring, according to a company statement. The facility on 260 acres north of the Old Dixie Highway/Polk Parkway interchange is expected to open in March in time for the 2013 blueberry harvest.
Five Star is building the packinghouse in partnership with Alpine Fresh Inc., a Doral grower, packer and shipper of blueberries and other fresh produce for 25 years. The facility will employ about 15 full-time employees plus seasonal workers.
