Elizabeth, NJ – The Gellert Global Group, including the Atalanta Corporation, is proud to announce its founder, George G. Gellert, was inducted into the New Jersey Business Hall of Fame on Monday, December 3. This prestigious and remarkable honor follows decades of service to his family, Atalanta Corporation and the state of New Jersey.
Selection for the award is in coordination with NJBIZ Magazine’s annual Business of the Year Awards. The awards, which celebrate businesses and business leaders that demonstrate outstanding accomplishments within the state of New Jersey, also include the Emerging Business of the Year, Executive of the Year, Corporate Citizen of the year, and the NJBIZ Hall of Fame. This highest honor is bestowed upon business leaders who have shown continuing dedication to business achievements in New Jersey.
Mr. Gellert’s business career began in law, working for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the U.S. Army Material Command in Washington, D.C. He soon joined the international food importing business of his father-in-law, Leon Rubin. After joining Atalanta in 1966, Mr. Gellert became president soon after, and was named chairman in 1980. He recalled to NJBIZ magazine, “’I’ve been working since I was 5 years old, and always had an interest in business.’” After getting a taste of life at Atalanta in the 1960s, Mr. Gellert reflected, “’I know I’m a lawyer, but this food business is sort of interesting.’”
Now the largest privately owned food distribution company in the United States, the success of Atalanta, which specializes in specialty cheeses, meats and grocery items, is primarily based on the dedication of Mr. Gellert, a drive unmatched by many. As a pillar of strength within the company, particularly after the hardships of Hurricane Sandy in October, Mr. Gellert’s leadership and passion has become more focused, with the company emerging stronger than ever.
