Bellingham Blue cheese has won a much-coveted medal at the recent Blas na hEireann/National Irish Food Awards. Bellingham Blue won the silver award for blue cheese, adding to an impressive tally of Irish and international awards. The annual Blas na hEireann (Literally, Taste of Ireland) awards are one of Ireland’s most prestigious awards and are keenly contested every year. This year the awards were announced during the Dingle Food Festival.
In the 11 years since Bellingham Blue was first produced by Peter Thomas of Mansfieldstown, Castlebellingham, it has won some of the biggest awards in the food business, including gold medals at the British Cheese Awards between 2001 and 20011, Supreme Champion Irish Cheese in 2010, and silver medal in the World Cheese Awards in 2008 .
Peter claims that the quality of his cheese is down to the standard of the raw milk he sources from a single closed herd of friesian cows, a few hundred yards down the road from his dairy in on the banks of the Glyde in Manieldstown, Castlebellingham. “It’s always good to win awards and for the cheese to be recognised, but I don’t do it for the awards, I do it for the pleasure of making a first class product out of the amazing raw material we have on our doorstep. It makes me happy any time someone tells me they’ve eaten our cheese and enjoyed it.”
