STOCKTON – A shuffling of brand names and other assets among corporate breadmakers will cost 128 Stockton workers their jobs as the former Sara Lee bakery is shut down Nov. 21.
Nearly a year ago, Nov. 5, the Sara Lee Fresh Bakery business, including the Stockton bakery, was acquired by Bimbo Bakeries USA, a division of Mexico's Grupo Bimbo. To receive U.S. Department of Justice clearance for the deal, however, Bimbo was required to sell its license rights to the Sara Lee and EarthGrains brands in California.
Thomasville, Ga.-based Flowers Foods Inc. will acquire those trademark rights and other assets, including the bakery at 2651 S. Airport Way. Financial terms of the sale were not disclosed.
A Bimbo Bakeries executive said the closure was mandatory.
