Madison, WI – Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Company of Marin County, CA received the 1st Place / Best of Class Award in the 2012 World Dairy Expo’s Championship Dairy Product Contest. With a near-perfect score of 99.25, Bay Blue, the newest addition to the Point Reyes Farmstead product line, was named Best Blue Cheese of the competition.
This year’s contest, sponsored by the Wisconsin Dairy Products Assn. (WDPA), received a record number of 720 entries from dairy processors throughout North America.
Bay Blue, a natural-rinded, fudgey-textured blue cheese, has a golden, yellow interior and sweet, salted-caramel finish. “We are thrilled to introduce Bay Blue to our blue cheese-loving customers. Bay Blue is truly unique with mellow, rich flavor and a rustic style,” said Bob Giacomini as he received the award Tuesday in Madison.
Giacomini, together with his wife and four daughters, founded Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Company on their family dairy in 2000. Ultra-creamy, full flavored Original Blue™ Cheese is the flagship product of the company and Toma, a buttery-flavored table cheese, was released to critical acclaim in 2010. The Point Reyes Farmstead product line is available nationally at independent cheese shops and specialty chains as well as at www.pointreyescheese.com.
“It is amazing how dairy manufacturers have embraced this contest,” says Brad Legreid, executive director of WDPA. “Due to the tremendous support from dairy companies throughout North America, the World Dairy Expo Championship Dairy Product Contest has averaged a 20% annual rate of growth over its first ten years, a direct reflection of the high level of interest that dairy processors have in entering the only judging contest of its kind in North America.” Visit the World Dairy Expo website for a complete listing of competition winners.
