Madison, WI – River Ridge student Hope Schier and teacher Shane Sperle were recently chosen as the Wisconsin Student Ambassador and Wisconsin Advisor of the Year for Fuel Up to Play 60. Fuel Up to Play 60 is an all-school nutrition and physical activity program sponsored locally by Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board and Green Bay Packers.
As the State Ambassador and Advisor, both Schier and Sperle had the opportunity to attend the national Fuel Up to Play 60 Summit in Washington, D.C. and the Wisconsin MVP summit in Green Bay this past summer.
Both Schier and Sperle are excited to start recruiting schools and students to implement Fuel Up to Play 60. In their new roles, they will be helping other students and schools get involved with the program.
"Fuel Up to Play 60 has made a difference in my life by helping me to eat healthy and get active," explains Schier, an 8th grade student from River River Middle School. "As the State Ambassador, I can now help other students do the same."
According to Sperle, a health and physical activity teacher at River Ridge Middle School, "All schools should get involved in Fuel Up to Play 60. It's a rewarding program that brings your entire school together."
River Ridge Middle School in Bloomington, Wisconsin has had a lot of success with Fuel Up to Play 60. They won a national challenge prize of a NFL Player visit. They won several Wisconsin challenge prizes including a trip to a Green Bay Packer Game and a workout at the Green Bay Packer practice facility. They have made several sustainable changes at their school to help make their student body healthier. They implemented a Walk it Out Wednesdays physical activity play that encourages their entire school to walk before school once a week and they've also made yogurt and fruit smoothies available on certain days during lunch.
"Both Hope and Shane have shown leadership and dedication to Fuel Up to Play 60, and to the health and wellness of their peers," said Laura Wilford, Director Wisconsin Dairy Council. "They're making changes that help ensure a healthier future for themselves, their schools and their communities, and we can't wait to see what they will accomplish with their new roles."
In addition to the Wisconsin State Ambassador and Advisor, 13 Fuel up to Play 60 regional representatives were selected from across the state. These regional student and advisor representatives also attended the MVP training in Green Bay this summer and are committed to help grow Fuel Up to Play 60 in Wisconsin Schools.
