More than 20 trade journalists from 8 European countries declared Rudbeckia ‘Gold Star’ and Volmary Pflanzen-Markenkonzept the winners of the Press Award at Plantarium 2012. Volmary Pflanzen-Markenkonzept, entered by Volmary GmbH from Germany, won in the Concepts category. It was a particularly close finish, as the winner was only 1 point ahead of Plant ’n ’Relax by Roses for Ever from Denmark. Rudbeckia ‘Gold Star’, entered by F.N. Kempen from Mijdrecht (NL), won in the Garden, terrace and balcony plants category. This was also a very close-run contest. Campanula Fairytale Flowers® DARK GET MEE by PKM Fairytale Flowers from Denmark ended up in second place, just 2 points behind the winner. The Plantarium Press Award was presented to the winners by the chairman of the Jury, Klara Biza, chief editor of the Hungarian trade journal Kertészet és Sz?lészet.
In the Concepts category, 5 entries were judged by the jury. There were 22 entries in the Garden, terrace and balcony plants category. In the plants category, Cercis canadensis ‘Ruby Falls’ by Johan Stolwijk en Zoon Boomkwekerijen BV won third place. 4th place went to Hydrangea Flair&Flavours® Cotton Candy and Blueberry Cheesecake by Valkplant BV and Andre Van Zoest, and 5th place went to Camellia rosthorniana ‘Cupido’.
When it came to Volmary Pflanzen-Markenkonzept, the jury commented that this included “a wide selection of plants, from colourful ornamental plants to herbs. And herbs are trendy, too. The total concept fits in beautifully with the ‘grow it yourself’ trend.” The jury were also enchanted by the pots and the accompanying labels.
With regard to Rudbeckia ‘Gold Star’, the jury commented that this plant is propagated from seed, which is good for the growers as it is cheaper to propagate. This compact plant, which flowers abundantly for a long period, also exhibits a high degree of uniformity.
