FleuroStar Twists Again With Trendy, Tri-Colored Verbena

Fleuroselect, the international ornamentals organisation is proud to announce that its FleuroStar Award for 2012/2013 goes to the tri-coloured Verbena x hybrida 'Lanai Twister Red' created by Syngenta Flowers.

The winner was announced at the annual Fleuroselect Gala dinner that was held in Castelbrando, Italy on Friday 6th of July. Breeder Har Stemkens of Syngenta Flowers accepted the prize from Fleuroselect President Nils Klemm and Jan Sijm, Chairman of the Evaluation Committee.

Nils Klemm: "I am very honoured to give this key award in the horticultural sector to Syngenta Flowers. The Verbena x hybrid Lanai Twister Red will simply be irresistible at the point of sale." According to the jury, the Verbena x hybrida 'Lanai Twister Red' "is a striking variety which will impact hugely at garden centres."

Multi-colouring in single flower

Syngenta's Verbena x hybrida 'Lanai Twister Red' introduces three colours within the same flower: rose-red, white and pink. The brand new flower pattern is a real eye-catcher. Breeder Har Stemkens: "Multi-colouring is an important trend in the horticultural sector. Inspired by the popular assortiment trays, I wanted to create a unique flower pattern offering stunning colours in one flower."

The prolific plants are first semi-upright and later trailing. They will excel in beddings, containers and in hanging baskets. The beautiful, open, highly visible flower also looks fantastic in mono-plant displays.

'Lanai Twister Red' is a heat lover that will thrive easily throughout summer's high temperatures and humidity. It is self-cleaning and requires very little maintenance.

FleuroStar Contest

The FleuroStar Contest is held annually during the FlowerTrials week in June in the Netherlands and Germany. An independent panel of more than 30 expert judges from a cross-section of the cultivation, production and retail sectors as well as trade journalists and marketing professionals visited the 8 competition locations to choose the winner with the biggest 'wow' effect at point of sale.

Syngenta's award winning Verbena was competing with the Begonia boliviensis 'Santa Cruz Sunset' from Benary, the Dianthus cultivars 'Pink Kisses' from Selecta Klemm and Volmary's Thunbergia alata 'Arizona Glow'.
