Quietly during the past year, Cabot Creamery rolled out a new logo. Gone from the side of butter cartons and the company’s trucks was the thin, green shape of Vermont, now replaced by a green barn.
In the past week, however, the change has gone from quiet to creating quite a ruckus. It has seeped even into politics. Somehow, butter has become a hot topic in the race for attorney general, as the candidates looking to unseat the incumbent call for a different approach that they say might have kept the Vermont name on Cabot products.
“It really isn’t good for Vermont,” said Jack McMullen, Republican candidate for attorney general. Having Vermont’s name attached to Cabot products is good for the state, he said.
T.J. Donovan, a Democrat challenging incumbent Attorney General Bill Sorrell in the primary, came out with a statement saying he supported Gov. Peter Shumlin’s effort to keep Vermont on Cabot’s label.
