A second 36-hour commercial fishing opener on the Copper River was set to begin at 7 a.m. on June 4, in the wake of a May 31 period that brought in 1,800 Chinook, 130,000 sockeye and 9,000 chum salmon.
Prices at Pike’s Market on the Seattle waterfront were holding at $49.95 for whole reds and $29.99 a pound for whole kings, while fillets were garnering $16.99 a pound for reds and $44.99 a pound for kings. In the Anchorage area, fresh Copper River sockeye salmon entrees at about $30 a plate were remaining very popular.
Through June 2, the preliminary Copper River salmon harvest was 6,800 kings, 911,000 reds, 9,000 chum and fewer than 1,000 coho salmon.
The preliminary harvest estimate from the 48-hour period May 31-June 1 was 1,800 Chinook, 130,000 sockeye and 9,000 chum salmon, compared to an anticipated harvest of 1,800 Chinook and 85,400 sockeye salmon of this period.
