COLONIE — Hannaford Supermarkets is now guaranteeing that all its seafood, from fresh salmon to canned tuna, is sustainably harvested.
The policy covers all 2,500 kinds of fish the chain sells, whether fresh, frozen, canned or packaged.
George Parmenter, manager of sustainability for the Maine-based chain, said Hannaford does not want to contribute to causing fish populations to decline. The United Nations estimates that 80 percent of fisheries are overfished or at maximum harvest.
Ellen K. Pikitch, professor and executive director of the Institute for Ocean Conservation Science at Stony Brook University, said Hannaford follows Whole Foods in selling properly harvested fish. Whole Foods plans to open its first Capital Region store at Colonie Center.
