Euro Foods Recalls Chorizo Due To Misbranding & Undeclared Allergen

WASHINGTON – Euro Foods, Inc., which also does business as Citterio USA Corp., a Freeland, Pa. establishment, is recalling approximately 5,156 pounds of a chorizo product because of misbranding and an undeclared allergen. The product contains soy protein, which is an allergen that is not declared on the label, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

  • 7-oz packages of "CITTERIO RUSTICO CHORIZO SPANISH STYLE," containing 24 pieces of chorizo. Each package is marked with an identifying lot number "659," and has an expiration date of either "8/12/12" or "9/29/12."
  • 7-oz packages of "CITTERIO RUSTICO CHORIZO SPANISH STYLE," containing 24 pieces of chorizo. Each package is marked with an identifying lot number "135," and has an expiration date of "11/30/12."

The product subject to recall bears the establishment number "EST. 4010" inside the USDA mark of inspection. The product was produced on Nov. 5, 2011, and Feb. 28, 2012, and was distributed to retail establishments and wholesale distributors in Florida, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Tennessee and Texas.

The problem was discovered by FSIS personnel during a routine food safety assessment and may have occurred as a result of a change in the ingredient formulation of a spice mix used in the product. FSIS and the company have not received reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of this product. Anyone concerned about a reaction should contact a healthcare provider.
