East Coast Fiddlehead Ferns Now Available At Ruma Fruit And Produce

Everett, MA – Those tightly-coiled edible shoots from the ostrich ferns that grow along the rivers and streams in New England and beyond, called fiddlehead ferns, are now in season and available at Ruma Fruit and Produce. The harvesting season for fiddleheads is short – typically beginning at the end of April and lasting through mid-June. Fiddleheads can be enjoyed in a variety of ways, including in pastas, pestos, salads, or as a side dish simply sautéed with garlic and herbs. Many fine restaurants include them on their spring menu, and as word has spread about this delicious wild vegetable, consumers are seeking them out at their neighborhood grocery store. Fiddleheads can also be frozen and enjoyed for later use.

With roots beginning in 1900 when Giacomo Ruma began selling fruits and vegetables at Haymarket Square in Boston, Ruma Fruit and Produce is now the largest distributor of fiddleheads on the East Coast. In addition to specialty produce such as fresh fiddleheads and Maine wild blueberries, Ruma’s creates fruit and gourmet gift baskets which are shipped nationwide (Ruma’s Fruit and Gift Basket World), and also provides refurbished wooden pallets to businesses (Ruma’s Pallet World of New England.) “The key to our success, and sometimes to our survival, has been to diversify” says Jim Ruma, 3rd generation owner and current President of the company, “and fiddleheads have been a big part of that”.
