Metro Supermarket Chain Fighting Fiercer Competition

MONTREAL – The 600-store Metro supermarket chain in Quebec and Ontario is fighting fiercer competition from Walmart, Loblaws, Sobeys, Costco and soon Target by selling more high-margin fresh produce, launching new food products and sprucing up customer service and store layouts.

But CEO Eric La Flèche, speaking after Metro disclosed very healthy second-quarter results, said he wants to accelerate the expansion of the recently acquired Adonis ethnic foods unit in Quebec and Ontario.

Metro also has a Quebec success on its hands – the Metro et Moi cashback loyalty program with or without the use of the French accent on the plastic cards as demanded by nationalists.
