As swordfish stream through the Florida Straits, moving faster than U.S. attack submarines, they may soon encounter a greater number of hooks and harpoons.
The iconic ocean predators, which can swim up to 50 miles per hour, have replenished their depleted numbers since the late 1990s. Unlike the bluefin tuna, the shark and other highly sought after fish, they have emerged as a rare victory for marine conservation.
Among the measures taken: a campaign urging restaurants to "Give Swordfish a Break," the imposition of tighter international restrictions and decisions by U.S. authorities to shut down fisheries and protect nursery areas.
