Americas Styrenics Introduce New Sustainable Polystyrene Product For Foodservice Market

THE WOODLANDS, Texas — Americas Styrenics today announced the launch of a new single pellet polystyrene product made from 25% post-consumer recycled and 75% virgin polystyrene. PolyRenewTM polystyrene, produced with post-consumer recycled content provided by NextLife through an agreement with HAVI Global Solutions (HGS), fills an unmet sustainable product need in the foamed polystyrene foodservice market segment.

“As a leading U.S. producer of polystyrene, we are continually looking for ways to improve our product offerings for our customers and support their, and our company’s, desire to reduce our environmental footprint,” said Scot Mitchell, Commercial Vice President for Americas Styrenics. “We are very proud to work with HGS, a leader in packaging, supply chain, analytics, and promotions; and, sustainability leader NextLife, to offer a new product that meets the market’s sustainable product needs. With the launch of our PolyRenewTM polystyrene, we are proving that polystyrene can be recycled and reused in food contact applications. We look forward to supporting our customers as they use PolyRenewTM polystyrene to bring new sustainable products to market.”

FDA compliant for food packaging applications, PolyRenewTM polystyrene offers molders and manufacturers nationwide a durable and sustainable consumer and commercial foodservice packaging alternative for take-out clamshells, bowls, plates, cups, egg cartons, trays, and other foam food packaging.

PolyRenewTM polystyrene possesses similar physical, mechanical, and thermal properties to virgin high-heat general-purpose polystyrene.

“HGS is committed to delivering a competitive advantage to our customers by helping them address growing consumer and regulatory demands for greater environmental responsibility,” said Dan Musachia, president of HGS.

Molders and manufacturers will be able to process PolyRenewTM polystyrene just like virgin polystyrene, and are provided with the same effective insulation and safe food handling benefits as traditional polystyrene resins with the added advantage of post-consumer recycled content.

“Nextlife has witnessed the increase in market demand for more sustainable alternatives to traditional virgin plastics. We are glad to be a part of that solution and to help bring PolyRenewTM polystyrene to the market with the use of our post consumer resins,” said Ronald Whaley, President of NextLife.

The recycled polystyrene source content undergoes a complex washing, blending and polymerization process to create the single pellet PolyRenewTM polystyrene product. As a single pellet product, PolyRenewTM polystyrene maintains traceability and post-consumer recycled material source control for product consistency.
