The Peruvian Asparagus Importer’s Association (PAIA) today announced the celebration of 10 years service to the asparagus industry.
On September 5th, 2001, a group of Peruvian asparagus importers met to discuss critical issues for the future trade of the Peruvian asparagus import deal. During the meeting, the need for a formal association was discussed and agreed upon – membership included the majority of Peruvian asparagus importers. After a successful 6 month pilot program, the importers agreed to continue the association in 2002.
Chris Martin, President of Gourmet Trading, Los Angeles, California and PAIA West Coast Co-Chair states, “Our association enables the industry at large to interact and network with key industry players. We are focused on staying ahead of market issues and operate as an influential contributor to advancing the trade.”
“We work to diligently to supply the U.S. with quality asparagus year round,” adds Walter Yager, CEO Alpine Fresh, Miami, Florida and PAIA East Coast Co-Chair. “We are dedicated to enhancing the overall trade process which enables U.S. retailers and foodservice alike to stock quality asparagus on shelves year-round.”
The association reports its focus as principally on governmental, regulatory, technical issues, marketing, and promotion. It has become a key player in identifying strategic solutions for solving logistical industry issues.
Today, ten years later, the association represents over 90% of the production of Peru, as well as significant industry service providers committed to improving the process by working collectively with industry and agency. Priscilla Lleras, Association Coordinator states, “Our association provides the platform for discussion of the entire asparagus deal. We have our finger on the pulse of the industry and we are a vital / proactive part in solving industry issues.”
The association will focus even greater efforts in 2012 on spreading the positive word to industry trade press, supermarkets and consumers concerning the benefits of fresh asparagus – through articles, advertisements, direct-communication, and trade show participation. The association anticipates increasing consumption and demand for fresh asparagus in 2012/2013.
