Harrison Higaki, chief executive officer of Bay City Flower Co., is the 2012 San Mateo County Farmer of the Year. Higaki accepted the award on Friday , surrounded by family and some of his company’s own flowers, during the 43rd annual Mel Mello Farm Day Luncheon in Half Moon Bay.
Higaki is a third-generation farmer. In fact, his father, Harrison Higaki Sr., was given the award in 1998.
Higaki said he knew something was up when his three daughters and mother and father attended festivities with him. Nevertheless, he seemed surprised by the honor. He spoke briefly about overcoming the recession and his long tradition in the area.
“Half Moon Bay is an agriculture city,” he noted.
