Tom Smull maps out activities for his young nephew and niece when they come to downtown Des Moines for weekend visits.
The plan last month: Make homemade pizza. But first they had to shop for ingredients. Their only stop was Graziano Brothers Italian Foods, 1601 S. Union St., Des Moines.
“We purposely chose a place with the sights and smells of a small neighborhood grocery store,” Smull said. “We wanted to create memories for them.”
Graziano’s celebrates its 100th anniversary next month. Few places like it remain. The Italian foods specialty store is a legacy handed down by a generation who followed their countrymen to a new world. They came clutching little more than their dreams and a passion for faith, family and food.
