Aisle50 To Use Groupon Model At Pittsburgh Shop'n Save Supermarkets

Daily deal giant Groupon proved that, given the right discount, consumers will pay upfront for a restaurant deal or a pedicure they might not use for months. Now the question is whether that same model can be used to sell a container of yogurt or a rotisserie chicken at the grocery store.

The Shop'n Save group of stores in the Pittsburgh region plans to find out, signing on as the second chain in the country to implement a system created by a tech startup out of Chicago.

Starting Thursday, customers will be invited to opt-in to get emails about deals set up by Aisle50, a company that already dishes out offers to about 15,000 customers of Lowes Foods, a supermarket chain in Winston Salem, N.C., with more than 100 stores.

"It's just another way to add value," said Pete Bazanos, e-marketing manager, for Shop'n Save. The stores in this market are independently owned but all supplied by grocery distributor Supervalu.
