Once known as a shrimping town, Delcambre was hit hard by an onslaught of imports about 10 years ago that has continued to drive down prices.
But a state program tested in the southwest Louisiana community could help fishermen there and across the coast compete.
In coming weeks, The LSU AgCenter and Louisiana Sea Grant plan to launch Louisiana Direct, a website that will connect local fishermen with potential customers. It will focus on four regions: Lafourche and Terrebonne, New Orleans, Cameron and its original site, Delcambre.
Small-business advocates and seafood-industry representatives say fishermen selling directly to their customers at a dock, farmers market or through an online directory — avoiding a middleman — could help save the local industry.
