NY State Lawmakers Move To Ban The Sale, Trade & Possession Of Shark Fin

Better get your shark-fin soup fix now: it soon could be illegal.

New York state lawmakers unveiled a bill Tuesday that would ban the sale, trade and possession of the Chinese delicacy. If the proposal legislation is signed into law, New York will join Washington, Oregon, California and Hawaii in restricting shark products.

“New York was one of the top three markets for shark fin after California and Hawaii, so we’d actually expect New York would see an increase in traffic” following bans in those states, said Beth Lowell, campaign director for OCEANA, an advocacy group backing the New York legislation.

Shark fins are used in soups served at traditional Chinese weddings and other celebrations. The delicacy is pricey: a large bowl can sell for more than $100 in the city.
