MOUNT VERNON — A $2 million expansion for the Artuso Pastry Foods Corp. envisions a new bakery in Mamaroneck and a higher profile for the company’s goods in local supermarkets.
Through investments in new baking machines and up to 18 new hires, Artuso expects to increase its volume 20 percent to 25 percent in 2012.
The growth doesn’t mean the beloved company, which got its start in the Bronx’s Little Italy, will sacrifice the bakery’s traditions for mass production.
“We’re going to automate where it doesn’t make a difference and keep the hand-made touch where it does,” said Anthony Artuso Jr., whose grandfather, Vincent F. Artuso Sr., founded the family business in 1946. “This is going to be a transformational year for us, not only what we produce, but how we produce it.”
