California's Bumper Kiwi Crop Births Lots Of Fuzzy Fruit

Kiwifruit vines may be dormant in Tulare County, but local kiwifruit is currently being shipped to farmers markets, supermarkets and shoppers around the country and world.

The fuzzy brown, egg-looking fruit with bright green flesh is named for its resemblance to the kiwi, New Zealand's national bird. The term kiwi, often used for kiwifruit, is also a nickname used for the people of New Zealand.

"[The fruit are] good to eat this time of the year," said Becky Terry, who sells kiwifruit for Fagundes Agri-Business at the Visalia Farmers Market. "They contain natural antioxidants and are a power food."

Kiwifruit harvest in the San Joaquin Valley takes place between October and Thanksgiving, but the shipping season lasts until May. Hayward kiwifruit is the most common commercial kiwifruit grown in California.
