Rick VanderWey's grandmother was a Nebraska homesteader.
Her grandson is trying to combine fencing, feeding and other largely unchanged rigors of ranching life with cutting-edge marketing of a new product called Sandhill Ranchers Beef.
So far, Facebooking doesn't feel quite as familiar as the fencing and feeding.
"I'm not computer-literate, but my wife (Kitty) does quite well at it," the 48-year-old, fourth-generation Valentine rancher said with a laugh. "I watch over her shoulder."
The VanderWeys are among three ranching families on the ownership end of a new beef business supplied by 94 ranching operations on both sides of the Nebraska-South Dakota border.
