FOWLER — Surrounded by cornfields, beanfields and wind turbines, who would think that a business in the middle of Benton County that raises and sells saltwater shrimp on a retail basis would be a success?
The enterprise that the husband and wife team of Darryl and Karlanea Brown started 18 months ago has already expanded once. A revamped business plan calls for more of the same within two years.
"What we're offering is a much better, fresher idea," said Karlanea Brown, vice president of RDM Farms LLC. "We want everybody to have the freshest-tasting shrimp."
The company has 11-day-old shrimp shipped to them overnight from a hatchery in Florida. About five months later they are sold fresh — never frozen — to consumers.
