Van Buren, NY — When Mike Scanlon joined Sysco Syracuse in 1990 as a buyer, the food-distribution company had about 150,000 square feet and 125 or so employees at its site in Van Buren.
Today, the facility has grown to about 500,000 square feet, it has 500 to 550 employees — depending on the season — and Scanlon is company president.
This year alone, the company is spending about $20 million on an expansion that includes enlarging space and adding technology. While from the outside it may appear work is done, inside the building, workers are taking down old walls and installing new racks as the building is reconfigured.
While Sysco’s silver tractor-trailers are a common sight on the roads of Upstate New York, the company isn’t a household name. That’s by design, Scanlon said. The company doesn’t sell to consumers; it sells to restaurants, colleges, hospitals, stadiums and other food-service institutions.
