Bakersfield, CA – Two leading Spanish fruit marketers and one prominent Brazilian grape company will soon bring new varieties of Sun World-bred seedless grapes and stonefruit to their global customer base, Vice President Johan
Jooste announced recently. The new licenses were granted to Tanynature SA of Badajoz, Spain for stonefruit, MOYCA of Murcia, Spain for grapes, and COANA of Petrolina, Brazil for grapes.
With these new appointments, Sun World International LLC ("Sun World") has licensed several dozen produce marketing companies in ten countries to sell fruit from Sun World-bred stonefruit and grape varieties.
COANA, a cooperative of five leading Brazilian grape producers, joins existing Brazilian grape marketer licensees VDS Export, Katope and Special Fruit. MOYCA and TANY are strong complements to Spanish marketer El Ciruelo, a Murcia, Spain based company holding dual Sun World licenses in stonefruit and grapes.
"Spain is an essential supply platform for Europe and these new appointments will boost the production capacity as well as the accessibility to our varieties by key retailers and distributors throughout Europe and the United Kingdom," Jooste said. "The principals of MOYCA and Tanynature, represented by the Moya and Naranjo families respectively, have exceptional horticultural and fruit marketing expertise that will provide even greater visibility for our brands and varieties in Europe," he noted. "And," he added, "COANA's five members bring noteworthy grape farming skills and an astute attention to quality, enabling us to broaden our Brazilian supply base and extend the availability of our brands during key strategic marketing windows."
The licensed grapes include a wide range of white, red and black seedless varieties developed at Sun World's California-based Variety Development Center. The fruit is sold under private trademarks and brands such as MIDNIGHT BEAUTY®, SCARLOTTA SEEDLESS®, SABLE SEEDLESS® and SOPHIA SEEDLESS®.
The licensed stonefruit includes series of plum varieties marketed under brands such as BLACK DIAMOND®, BLACK GIANT® and RED GIANT® as well as apricots sold under the HONEYCOT® brand, peaches under the AMBER CREST® brand and nectarines under the SUPER STAR® brand.
Sun World's fruit licensing program involves more than 1,000 producers and marketing companies in most of the world's major fruit-growing regions. In addition to the new Spanish and Brazilian appointments, Sun World has licensed marketers in Italy (Peviani, DiDonna, Apofruit and Agrintesa); Portugal (Vale de Rosa); Israel (TALI Grapes); Chile (Dole Chile, Unifrutti, Subsole, Frutera Santa Maria, Gesex and Tuniche); Australia (Perfection Fresh, Grape Exchange, Montague's and Holman Fresh); New Zealand (Yummy Fruit Co and Fresh NZ 2000); South Africa (Capespan, The Grape Co., Dole South Africa, Green Marketing and Suiderland/New Vision); and in the United States (Wawona Packing, Sunwest, Enns/Wespak).
Its new variety development work focuses on a full range of fresh grapes with extraordinary characteristics such as enhanced flavor, distinctive taste, larger berries and clusters, earlier and later ripening times and availability, and increased productivity. The California company also develops new plums, peaches, apricots and nectarines for its own production and for other growers to produce under license.
