Damascus Bakeries, the commercial baking in Brooklyn that is relocating to 60 McClellan St in the Newark, NJ Urban Enterprise Zone, broke ground this week on its 117,419 square foot industrial building about a mile from Newark's Liberty International Airport.
Damascus Bakeries will bring over 180 jobs to the city and is committed to hiring Newark residents as part of this move. Damascus Bakery purchased the building for close to $3.5 million and will invest close to $1.2 million in site improvements and upgrades. The opening is scheduled to deliver in early 2012.
Damascus Bakeries joins Wakefern Food Corporation, which broke ground on a new 180,000 sf New Jersey distribution center in August 2011, as well as The Manischewitz Company, Pacific Group Holdings (Bonita Bananas), and Bartlett Dairy, all of which opened new local headquarters in New Jersey earlier this year.
