Argentinean Blueberry Route Takes Flight In September

Buenos Aires, Argentina – The Argentinean Blueberry Committee (ABC) projects its association members will begin shipping fall blueberries to the United States by air in September.

Direct-flown to stores via the newly launched “blueberry route,” Argentina’s blueberries are the first off-season product to reach the U.S. market, extending the fresh season from fall into winter.

In the past five years, Argentina’s blueberry exports to the U.S. have tripled. With a strong grower association, Argentina provides reliable volume during the important sales period from September through December.

The Argentinean Blueberry Committee, founded in 2008, established new standards of quality and safety and expanded Argentinean exports globally.

ABC Committee Manager Inés Peláez said, “We are working with our exporters to provide U.S. buyers with timely crop information, including volume projections, updates on weather and growing conditions and status of production and shipments.”

The pre-season crop report, distributed on Aug. 30, will provide projected volumes by growing region, destination and time of arrival. A second report will be issued Sept. 25; ABC expects a good harvest for the 2011-2012 season.

The majority of Argentinean-grown blueberries enter the U.S. through the Port of Miami. ABC will participate in PMA this year as part of a national Argentinean pavilion (booth #4847).
