National Potato Council Awards Academic Scholarship

Washington, DC — The National Potato Council (NPC) announced that Anders Schmidt Huseth is the recipient of its 2011-2012 NPC Academic Scholarship. Huseth is currently working toward his Ph.D. and is a Research Assistant in the Applied Vegetable Entomology program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research interests are focused upon Integrated Pest Management and Insecticide Resistance Management of the Colorado potato beetle (CPB). Huseth earned his bachelor’s degree in biogeography from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. NPC recognizes that successfully managing CPB is an important challenge confronting the potato industry and has awarded Huseth the annual scholarship for his research on sustainable pest management for potato producers. Huseth stood out in a field of qualified applicants, all of whom are helping to push the industry towards a strong future.

Every year, NPC awards a scholarship to one graduate-level student conducting research for the benefit of the potato industry to aid them in their studies. Scholarship candidates are judged on a number of criteria including past academic achievement, leadership abilities and areas of study related to the potato. In essence, National Potato Council is looking for a candidate not only with exceptional academic credentials but also with a passion for using academia to further the knowledge and understanding of the potato as it relates to society as a whole. Thanks to all of the supporters who help fund the scholarship program, and to all of the applicants working for the betterment of the industry. Huseth has exhibited both in a variety of ways.
