Time, Patience Required In Gladiolus Process

Florence Township, Mich. — Each August in St. Joseph County, a field event happens in Florence Township that is rarely seen anywhere else in the U.S.

People see it and don’t believe it. Occasionally, a driver will pull off the road, find the manager, and ask, “What in the world are you doing to those beautiful flowers?”

Brian Schreuder, field manager for Fred W. Nagel & Sons of Three Rivers, said the flower topping never fails to attract questions.

He explains that topping off the gladiolus spikes for the sake of discarding the flowers promotes growth of a good hard bulb with quality skin. And selling bulbs is what their business is all about.
