NEWPORT – Soon the ribbons, medals, plaques and trophies will be the last physical evidence of the quality in dairy products crafted by Louis Trauth Dairy in Newport, where production will end this month after 91 years.
No longer will the zesty French onion dip be made in Newport, nor the creamy eggnog, crowned by Cincinnati Magazine as the region’s best.
No more will workers at the dairy create cultured buttermilk or award-winning cottage cheese.
The plant is preparing to end production Aug. 26, which will cost 80 jobs. A spokeswoman for Dallas-based Dean Foods, which owns the plant, has said 190 people will remain on site for storage, sales, distribution and administration work.
