Tyson Sees Hard Times For Chicken Industry

SAN FRANCISCO — Tyson Foods Inc. warned Monday its chicken business is heading for a loss this quarter, raising the specter of another painful restructuring of the U.S. poultry market similar to the one brought on by the 2008 downturn.

It would mark Tyson’s /quotes/zigman/244186/quotes/nls/tsn TSN +2.84% first loss for its poultry unit since the first quarter of 2009. Producers have been combating too much supply, soft consumer demand and lofty prices for corn used to fatten chickens.

However, Tyson should be in a more-stable financial position to buffer against a loss. The company has managed to earn a profit through the first half of this year while others have racked up losses.
