Sunol, CA – Oh, the joys of summertime. It’s the perfect time of year for spending quality time outdoors with family and friends in the yard. School is out, and families have plenty of time for fun in the sun. Warm evenings are the perfect time for a barbecue with friends. But sometimes when people spend so much time in the yard, they notice that it could use a bit of sprucing up. If the yard isn’t looking quite as impressive as it could, Western Star Nursery, a Sacramento and Bay Area wholesale nursery, suggests adding a few new plants that look their best this time of year.
“Consider adding some colorful plants that bloom all summer long, and will come back year after year,” suggests Sally Painter, owner of the Bay Area and Sacramento landscape supply wholesaler.
Hemerocallis, also known as daylilies, are perennials that come in a variety of vibrant colors from peaches to yellows to purples. Each flower lasts only one day, but the plant makes so many buds in the heat of the season that they’re almost always in bloom.
Agapanthus, often called Lilly of the Nile, is a genus of hardy plants from South Africa that bloom bright blue in the summer. They look lovely in garden patches or in pots, and their fireworks of flowers are perfect for bouquets.
Euryops, or African bush daisies, are evergreen shrubs with bright yellow flowers that contrast nicely with their silvery green foliage. Euyrops are heat-resistant and thrive in the summer sunlight.
Western Star also notes that one of Northern California’s most popular trees is just now coming into bloom, making this the perfect time for planting. Crepe myrtles (Lagerstroemia) offer a spectacular bloom in shades ranging from whites, pinks, and purples to deep red. The crepe myrtle is a smallish, easy-to-maintain tree.
“Crepe myrtles are an easy way to liven up a yard. These trees offer nice shade and enhance the value of your home,” says Painter. “Compliment these with a lavender variety and daylilies with star-shaped flowers in yellows, oranges, red and white.”
