Belize Aquaculture, the source of our prized Belize shrimp, has been closed. In 2010, Sir Barry Bowen, the owner, was killed in a tragic plane crash. Since then, the various businesses making up Bowen and Bowen Ltd. have been evaluated. It was decided that Belize Aquaculture (BAL) would be closed.
We are diligently sourcing the world for a replacement. Not an easy task.
It was October of 2007 that we introduced new purchasing standards for farmed shrimp, raising the bar to meet tough health and environmental standards. BAL was our supplier-partner, committed to farming shrimp to eliminate the use of antibiotics and other chemicals, avoid damaging sensitive habitats, treat waste water and reduce the use of wild fish to feed shrimp. There were aggressive performance targets and an auditing and reporting system to monitor progress.
