PROVIDENCE, RI — The original Palmieri’s Bakery, the oldest Italian bakery in Rhode Island, made its debut at this year’s first Waterfire event in Providence recently. With three locations in Providence and North Providence, Palmieri’s also announced it will be at all Waterfire events in 2011, according to Theresa Meresi, the bakery’s owner and head baker. The most asked for items at Palmieri’s booth, which is near the Washington Street Bridge, were the bakery’s pizza strips, calzones, fresh-filled cannoli, and wine biscuits—a favorite with many Rhode Island residents.
“Waterfire is a great event for both the city and the state,” says Meresi. “We’ve wanted to be part of it for a longtime, but the opportunity didn’t present itself. We had to make sure we could provide the kind of fresh pastries we’re known for making before committing to the event. This year we had opportunity to become part of Waterfire and we took it. We’re happy to say we will now be at all the Waterfire events this year.”
Palmieri’s will have a booth at Waterfire on the following dates:
• Saturday, July 2
• Saturday, July 16
• Saturday, August 13
• Saturday, September 10
• Saturday, September 24
• Saturday, October 8
Founded in 1901, the original Palmieri’s Bakery is Rhode Island’s oldest Italian bakery and one of the oldest in the United States. It makes a wide variety of fresh Italian pastries using recipes past down from generation to generation. The Meresi family purchased the Palmieri name and store on Ridge Street in Providence in 2005. The owners have since expanded that location and added two more locations in Rhode Island, one in DePasquale Square in Providence and the other on Mineral Spring Avenue in North Providence.
