DENVER — Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. said Wednesday that it expects to use more than double the amount of local produce this year that it anticipated using.
The restaurant operator had a goal of using approximately 5 million pounds of local produce like bell peppers, oregano and romaine lettuce, but now foresees using more than 10 million pounds at its 1,100 locations.
"Not only is local produce fresher and better tasting, but it also helps support the environment and regional farming communities around the country," Founder, Chairman and Co-CEO Steve Ells said in a statement.
Chipotle started using produce grown at local farms in 2008 and has looked to increase its use each year.
